Gun for Fun close to retirement

PA Wellington One of New Zealand’s best known gallopers, Gun For Fun, is about to complete his .days on the racetrack. The rising 12 year old gelding will have two more starts before being retired, his trainer, Kevin Myers, announced on Thursday. His final races will be at Riccarton during the Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter carnival.

They will be in the Svdenham Brush Hurdles

a week today and then in the Grand National Hurdles on Wednesday, August 6. Gun for Fun finished third in the Sydenham Hurdles and then won the Grand National Hurdles at last year’s meeting. Gun For Fun was a top performer on the flat with placings in the Auckland and New Zealand Cups and a win in the Warrnambool Cup in Melbourne. He made a successful switch to jumping and has now won 16 races from

about 80 starts. Myers, who races Gun For Fun in partnership with his father, Bill, said the reason for retiring Gun For Fun was the big weights he was asked to carry in jumping events. “He has never been a great weight carrier and I believe it is time to call it a day/’ Myers said. Gun For Fun was entered for the Rangitikei Hunt Club’s meeting at Wanganui today but will not take his place in the field.
