Cold theatre

Sir,—l attended the opening performance of “Caravan” — a pleasant little play, but we all froze in the Theatre Royal. It was not quite as cold as the night we saw “Rocky Horror,” but nothing could beat the unheated theatre on that cold night. We understand the theatre is a large one to heat, but steps should be taken by the manager to ensure that a paying audience is comfortable. If I venture to the Theatre Royal again in the winter it will only be with rugs and hot water bottles. It is very hard to enjoy a play when one’s teeth are chattering in time with the rest of the audience; it very nearly drowned out the voices of an excellent cast.—Yours, etc., B. S. SMITH. July 10, 1986.

[Mr Graeme Carter, Theatre Royal manager, replies: “We regret that the heating system was not turned on earlier for the opening night of Caravan.’ It takes some considerable time for the theatre’s heating system to provide a comfortable warmth in the auditorium, especially during the exceptionally cold weather Christchurch experienced recently.”]
