Tokelaus want to stay

PA Wellington The tiny South Pacific territory of the Tokelau Islands has told a United Nations mission it does not want independence from New Zealand, said a member of the mission yesterday. Ammar Amari, of Tunisia, chairman of small territories sub-committee of the United Nations committee on decolonisation. said the Tokelaus

were happy to remain administered by New Zealand. The sub-committee of three members left Wellington yesterday after spending the last two days having talks with the Government, the State Services Commission and the local Tokelauan community about the group, which is a non-self-governing territory north of Western Samoa administered by New Zealand.

In Wellington the subcommittee members met the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, and the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Mr Prebble, and were guests of honour at a Ministerial luncheon. They have also had talks with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger.. The population of the Tokelaus is 1700. The group receives $3.3 million from New Zealand a year.
