Gatcombe’s Pride second to Barusha
PA Hawera Gatcombe’s Pride’s bubble burst when beaten by Barusha in the Subaru "7000,” the first leg of the TAB double at ' the Opunake Racing Club’s winter meeting at Hawera yesterday. The hot pot, backed as if unbeatable, had the perfect trail throughout but could not withstand Barusha’s determined finishing burst. At the post, the margin was only half a head with Gatcombe’s Pride fighting on doggedly.
Barusha, trained at Foxton by Jim Hayes, was ridden to perfection by leading apprentice Tony Allan. The five-year-old gelding was settled eighth and started to improve 700 metres from home. On the turn he was still spotting the leaders several lengths but came strongly down the outer to take the decision right on the line.
