Purau on way from Japan

The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s new $4.5 million tug Purau has left Japan and is on the way to Lyttelton. The Lyttelton Harbourmaster, Captain Jack Barbour, said yesterday that the Purau was expected to arrive at the port on Saturday, August 16. After an inspection, the tug would go into service almost immediately. Captain Barbour said that the Purau had satisfactorily completed recent sea trials. He declined to give any hints on the tug’s appearance other than to say, "She’s different.” The tug has two 1500horsepower engines, and is described as "highly manoeuvrable.” The contract for building the Purau was let to a Japanese firm, Kanematsu Gosho, and the

tug was built at Nagasaki.

The Purau sailed from Nagasaki on Monday afternoon (New Zealand time), will stop to bunker at Guam on Sunday, and sail on to Rabaul, in Papua New Guinea, to bunker again. The tug’s last port of call before arriving at Lyttelton will be Noumea, in New Caledonia, and is expected to arrive there on August 10.
