Tonga sees N-free treaty as political

By

MARY FONUA

in Nukualofa

Tonga is opposed to a Pacific nuclear-free policy becoming legally binding, although it agrees with the intentions of the treaty. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Crown Prince Tupouto’a, said in reply to a Parliamentary question that the treaty was a political issue initiated by Australia, and the restrictions of the treaty were in line with the present policy of the Tongan Government

The whole idea of the Pacific nuclear-free zone came about because the Australian Labour Party wanted it to become a law binding all subsequent Governments to their

party policy, he said. This kind of logic did not apply to Tonga, where there was no change of Government, and Government policy and the law were separated. Prince Tupouto’a did not think that Tonga’s nuclear-free policy would change.
