Another Chch HQ to leave

The loss of yet another national headquarters from Christchurch was announced yesterday. The head office of A. M. Satterthwaite and Company, Ltd, will move to Auckland. Satterthwaite’s was taken over in May by Chemby Industries, Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Aucklandbased listed investment company, Unity Group, Ltd.

Ten staff members will be transferred to Auckland, but 11 others will lose their jobs. The announcement was made by an Auckland spokesman for Chemby’s yesterday. Mr C J. Blewett has been appointed chief executive of Satterthwaite’s, following the retirement of Mr R. M. Satterthwaite as governing director. Mr Blewett has been with Satter-

thwaite’s for 47 years, latterly in charge of the firm’s activities in Auckland. The Chemby’s spokesman said a “major sales office” of 24 people would be maintained by Satterthwaite’s in Christchurch. Satterthwaite’s, established in 1932, is a merchant and importer of raw materials, with sales of about $6O million a year. Product lines in-

dude textiles, papers, chemicals, fertiliser, industrial, printing and packaging machinery, steel products and polypropylene film. The firm was set up by Mr Alan Satterthwaite with a capital of £l5OO in January, 1932. The recently retired managing director, Mr Ralph Satterthwaite, is the son of the founder.
