Games bond
Sir,—With the very unfortunate position the organisers of the Edinburgh Games now find themselves in, I would like to make a suggestion. The Olympic and Commonwealth Games organisers, if we are fortunate enough to hold the Games in 1990, should ask, when invitations are issued to all eligible countries, that a bond of $lOO,OOO be forwarded with acceptances. This sum could be given back to each country which fulfilled its obligation. This may help sensible people to realise the true basis of the Games — to compete on an equal basis regardless of colour, creed, race or religion. Then we may have true Games in the spirit in which they were envisaged. I only pray the Government of the day will leave sport to the competitors and do the job it was elected by the people to do — look after the country and its people. Politics and sport are like oil and water; they do not mix. — Yours, etc.,
S. GEORGE. July 22, 1986.
