Survey of nurses

Sir,—ln an uncharacteristic burst of employer-employee relations, the Canterbury Hospital Board surveyed its female nurses to see how many wished to continue wearing hats. The results were overwhelmingly in favour of banning hats and so the board dispensed with them almost immediately. Will the board continue in this fashion? When will we see surveys on whether the female nurses wish to wear pantyhose or trousers? How about surveys on open sandals in the summer? Or what about brown shoes instead of white? When will the entire nursing workforce be surveyed on whether it would prefer a fouron, two-off roster and affirmative action taken on the result? These are Issues which concern nurses’ work conditions; issues that have not been fully addressed before. More money is not always the answer. I wonder how many board members would like to be nursed by (and possibly have their lives in the hands of) someone who has worked for seven straight days and not had a week-end off for nearly three months? — Yours, etc.,

J. S. RITCHIE. July 14, 1986.
