Limit of $250 on Arts Council grants
Southern community arts councils will grant no more than $250 a project because of arts funding limitations.
The Southern Regional Arts Council has set $250 as an upper limit for its own and its community councils’ projects. For performance projects only guarantees against loss rather than outright grants will be considered by the regional council.
The. limits were set at the council’s meeting on Sunday in light of the nil increase in national arts funding this year.
The southern council was determined to main-
tain its community grants through community councils, said its director, Mr Graeme Gorton. But it had to make some cuts and decided to do that by setting a limit of $250 on each project. Because of advance commitments the council had little room to move within its planned budget. The limits will be reviewed regularly by the council. Mr Gorton said there was a need to convince the Government of the requirements of the regions. The strength of arts in the community depended on adequate sup-, port at community level.
