No reduction in drainage work

Drainage contractors will benefit from a recommendation by a Christchurch Drainage Board committee not to cut its works programme. The board’s development and construction committee was told yesterday that the existing works programme could lead to the board overspending by about $0.5 million this year.

One solution discussed by the committee was to reduce the programme to a level within the estimated spending. This option was rejected in favour of following the existing programme and meeting the shortfall out of special funds.

Another option was to step up the work flow.

The committee recommended that the board investigate ways of financing this option and a decision could be made at the board’s September meeting. The plight of drainage contractors was an important consideration, said committee members.

The committee’s chairman, Mr Brian Whelan, said that contracting work would be in short supply in September and October.

A shortage of work would mean that the board could get competitive prices for the contracts, and would therefore be to the advantage of ratepayers as well as the contractors, he said.
