Labour intent on 'righting economy’
Wellington reporter New Zealand will never be quite the same again, as a result of the Government’s economic policies, according to the Undersecretary of Trade and Industry, Mr Neilson. While ‘ the period of economic adjustment was painful for many, the alternatives would be far worse, he said. Labour had concentrated on . putting the economy right. That had required great courage as
sacred cows had had to be slaughtered in the national interest. A second Labour term would see a continuation of these economic policies, but with more attention paid to creating a fairer society through social policies. Mr Neilson said he doubted if many realised it yet but Labour’s policies in the 1980 s were just as revolutionary as the changes under a Labour Government in the 19305.
