Even spread of titles
Eight players picked up a title apiece when the Canterbury open badminton championships were decided at the Skellerup Hall on Saturday evening. That represented the most even spread of the honours in many years. Julie Still, the beaten
finalist last year, won the women’s singles; Prasanna Gulasekharam successfully defended his title for the first time.
The veteran, Geoff Miller, who has numerous titles to his credit over the years, had a share of the men’s doubles with his Railway
club partner, Mark Waidin; while Paula Thorpe and Lyndal Smith shared the women’s doubles. They beat Still and Megan Williams in the final, but Williams was not to be denied.
In the last, and longest match of the night, she combined with Graham Sercombe to triumph in
the mixed doubles, over Miller and Terri Perry. For Sercombe, however, that was the only bright spot of the night. In the singles, where he was seeded fourth, he was eliminated in the opening round by the promising Greg Bray, who went on to the semifinals.
