Road toll ‘disturbing’
PA Wellington In June there had been a disturbing increase in road fatalities, said the Under-Secretary of Transport, Mr Jefferis. “Sixty-nine people died on the New Zealand roads in June, a significant increase compared wj,th 47 in May and 56 in April,”
Mr Jeffries said. “I am very disappointed to see the road toll creeping up after the previous two months relatively low figures,” he said. Some people would no doubt blame the changes in the speed limits for the increase in fatalities. "But I think a thorough
evaluation of the present speed limit will need to take place before any such blame can be attributed,” said Mr Jeffries. He said the Road Safety and Communications Select Committee would soon review the first 12 months experience with the-present speed limit.
