Gatcombe’s Pride favoured at Hawera today

Special correspondent New Plymouth Nothing is ever a certainty in racing but Gatcombe’s Pride looks the closest thing to it at the Opunake Racing Club’s meeting at Hawera today. Gatcombe’s Pride is to contest the Subaru 7000, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Opunake meeting. The opposition is strong but he appears to have their measure. The Feilding three-year-old has dominated the Central Districts racing scene in recent weeks with some amazing winning performances. He has distanced his rivals on more than one occasion, with his last start win at, Trentham being scored by 12

lengths. Of his rivals, Work of Art and Wimsey appeal most. Work of Art has won her last three races, each by comfortable margins. Her most recent victory came at the Wanganui meeting on July 1. Wimsey was second to Work of Art at Wanganui last time out and filled the same placing behind Claytons at Hastings in his previous start. James Dean, Kelly Boy, Aurotor and Barusha appear the best hopes of the remaining runners. In the second leg, the South Taranaki Pet Foods Graduation, the Marton three-year-old, Avontor, should be successful. He is to be ridden by

the country’s leading jockey, Lance O’Sullivan, and is a horse in good form. Since winning five starts back, he has filled minor placings and another success does not look far away for the Avon Valley colt. Kloosterman has returned many of his best performances at Hawera and should race well again today. His last start ninth was in the Whyte Handicap and the opposition is nowhere near as strong here. Warwick Lad, a winner at Awapuni on Saturday, is capable of a repeat success, while Galaxy Bay and Lady Royal Oak are other chances.
