Life membership bestowed

Mrs Dorothy Crowther, of Canterbury, was made an honorary life member of the New Zealand Horse Society at the annual meeting in Wellington. Mrs Crowther has been an active member of the society since it was formed.

She held the position of secretary for more than nine years and did a term as area chairman. For some of these years she was also a council representative and was a member of the council from 1967 to 1983. She was a member of the national dressage committee from its inception until 1983. She is a list one judge and has been a selector and examiner. In addition to her dressage activities, Mrs Crowther has been active in horse trials since the early 19505. She assisted in running the second A.l. cup competition in 1954 and was a course planner in the late 19505, 1960 s and 19705.

She planned the course for the two-day event in 1969, and later the permanent course which was constructed at Riccarton racecourse in 1970. In 1975 she organised the first three-day event in the South Island and designed the course.

Jones and Hoskyns, of Rolleston, will again sponsor the pony race at the Christchurch Hunt race meeting on Saturday. It will be run between the second and third races. The race, a 600 m sprint, will be contested by 13 riders from pony clubs and hunts in the Canterbury area. Riders must be 12 years or older and be on a pony 14.2 hands or under, all weighing in at eight stone. Each starter will receive a package of goods and the winner will get

$4OO for his or her club. Prizemoney goes down to $25 for fifth.
