Long wait for cardiac surgery
PA Wellington The waiting list for heart by-pass operations at Wellington Hospital is so big some people die before their turn for surgery, says the medical superintendent, Mr Dick Laurenson. He said it was difficult to directly attribute the deaths to the time delays, but for patients who had to wait for up to a year for surgery the time lag would certainly have a detrimental effect The unit had a set limit of about 250 by-pass operations a year because of financial restraints, and while life threatening conditions were given priority the less urgent cases had to wait Mr Laurenson said the cardio-thoracic unit had the capacity for doing abojit 400 by-pass operations a year.
