Dunedin to fore in orienteering
Dunedin runners took line honours in both the senior men’s grade and the open relays in the Canterbury orienteering championships on the Port Hills at the weekend.
The host club, Peninsula and Plains Orienteers, won the senior women’s grade and mixed relays. Other clubs represented at the winners’ table were Southland, Hutt Valley and South Auckland.
The Canterbury championships, at Living Springs near Teddington on Saturday, attracted 113 entries. Weather for the open farmland and bush course was good but the ground was very wet.
Aiister Metherell (Dunedin) won the men’s 21A course in a time of Ih 19min 39s with the New Zealand representative, Barrie Foote (Dunedin) second in 1:25:18, and Trevor Hoey (Peninsula and Plains) a close third in
taking the Bob Alexander Memorial Trophy. Jo Guest (Peninsula and Plains) won the women’s 21A event and the Sibly Trophy for the fastest woman runner. The experienced Christchurch runner, Ken Sibly, won the men’s 40A grade and was awarded the Andrew Buchanan Trophy for the fastest time per kilometre. The lan Rowland Memorial trophies for the best individuals in the recent interschools competition were won by Jenny Adams and David Drage. The visitors made another strong showing in the Canterbury relays held at the Van Asch farm on Sunday. Twenty-six teams entered, the Dunedin Orienteering Club’s No. 1 team, Including both Metherell and Foote, winning the open grade ahead of the strong Peninsula and Plains team of Sibly, Hoey and Guest. Both events provided challenging courses with good route choices created by the planners, Rob Miller and Kevin McGlinchy.
