One act plays
The South Island divisional finals of the Theatre Federation’s Festival of Community Drama will be held this week-end. ; Non-professional theatre groups throughout the country will compete in the one-act play festival this year. Sponsored by Shell, the festival was first developed in 1983 and is run by the federation. District festivals are held in most centres with winners progressing to four divisional finals. Winners there go on to a national final. Divisional finals this year will be held at the Mill Theatre in Christchurch from July 25 to 26
the Howick Little Theatre in Auckland from August 1 to 2, the Little Theatre in Wanganui on August 8 and 9 and the Dunedin Playhouse on August 16. The national finals will be held In Wellington’s Victoria University Memorial Theatre. Three playwriting awards are offered at the festival to encourage the performance of New Zealand plays: This includes an award to a new New Zealand playwright Two Shell drama scholarships are presented to the most promising actors or actresses. The scholarships enable the recipients-to attend a federation summer school he’d ffiach January.
