Badminton hopes
From KEVIN TUTTY New Zealand’s chance of winning the bronze medal in the men’s badninton team competition will almost certainly be decided in the second of its four preliminary matches. When the draw was released yesterday, New Zealand was not among the four seedings. It could realistically have expected to be seeded fourth, but that position was given to the host team, Scotland. As a conseqence New Zealand was drawn in the same pool as the top seed, England, and the third seed, Australia. It should
be New Zealand’s match against Australia on Saturday morning that will decide whether it reaches the play-offs, ; and a chance of the bronze medal. England and Canada are favoured to win the gold and silver medals respectively. If New Zealand can beat Australia on Saturday morning — and stay fresh enough to dispose of Northern Ireland in the afternoon and Wales in the eveinlng — and qualify for the play-offs, it would -have a realistic chance of winning the play-off for the bronze, probably against Scotland.
