Museum given survival gear
Two life jackets and three packs of lifeboat supplies from the ill-fated Russian cruise liner, the Mikhail Lermontov, have been given to the Lyttelton Historical Museum. The liner sank at Gore Bay in the Marlborough Sounds on February 16 with the loss of one crew-man. The equipment was donated by the Baltic Shipping Company, through George Scales and Company. Mr Baden Norris, the museum’s curator, said he was delighted to be entrusted with the items, which would attract considerable interest. "Although this ship was lost barely six months ago, and may not be though of as museum material by some, I have no doubt that a museum’s role is to give shelter and importance no matter what its age,” he said.
