Security ‘tight’ for First Lady

NZPA-PA London A big security force was mounted at Heathrow Airport when the United States First Lady, Mrs Nancy Reagan, and a 20strong entourage, arrived for the Royal wedding.

Dozens of armed Special Branch men and uniformed police joined American secret service agents for the United States President’s wife’s arrival.

With possible terrorist action in mind, marksmen were on the roofs of adjacent buildings and dog patrols were on duty.

Asked how it felt to be in England Mrs Reagan said: “Love it”. Asked if she was looking forward to the wedding, she shouted across to reporters "I should say so.” Her Boeing 707, designated Executive 1, was a few minutes late. The entourage included secretaries, a hair dresser, a personal photographer and reputedly a female secret service agent. Mrs Reagan was driven off in an armour-plated limousine for the American Ambassador’s residence at Winfield House, in Regents Park, where she will stay for the four days of engagements until her departure.
