Wreck spills cargo

NZPA-AFP Amsterdam Ocean salvage vessels yesterday raced towards the wreck of a sunken British freighter that spilled 35 tonnes of lead, arsenic, and cadmium into the North Sea, reports said. The Dutch Water Resources Department said the freighter Olaf, which sank on July 7, started to leak at the week-end. Its cargo originally Included 355 tonnes of lead, 70 tonnes of arsenic and five tonnes of cadmium. The ship sank off the Dutch coast 80km southwest of Den Helder, a coastal city that serves as gateway to the port of Amsterdam. Observers said the leak, apparently provoked when undersea currents loosened a hatch cover stopped yesterday. Salvage tugs of the Rot-terdam-based Smit-Tak company, commissioned by Dutch authorities to raise the wreck, were heading for the ship, but a company spokesman said the work could v take nearly two weeks.
