Locks foil fire brigade
PA Tauranga Maketu volunteer firemen had to break into their shed to get their gear so they could answer a house fire call. The house in Te Awho Road was more than 80 per cent damaged in the blaze about 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Units from Te Puke and Pukehina also attended the fire.
The officer in charge of the Maketu unit, Mr Noel Pearce, said the trailerpump unit was stored in the country depot at Maketu. Unfortunately the locks had been changed on the shed door, and the fire unit had not been
told. “I suppose we lost five or 10 minutes while we forced the door so we could get the trailer unit out,” he said. “There is no telling what we could have saved if we had been able to get water on the blaze that much earlier,” said Mr Pearce.
