Tidal wave exercise

An imaginary tsunami will “threaten” most of New Zealand’s eastern coast this week.

The tsunami, or tidal wave, will be part of a Civil Defence exercise to test New Zealand’s warning system. The assistant director of Civil Defence operations, Mr Doug Bent, said the time of the exercise would not be announced in advance to ensure a degree of realism for the people involved. No public warnings or progress bulletins would be given and it was not intended to involve anyone outside the Civil Defence network of contacts, he said. The exercise will try modified procedures for sending warning messages within the Ministry of Civil Defence and from there to regional and local headquarters.
