Kaiapoi arson verdicts
After deliberating for almost four hours, a jury in the High Court yesterday returned verdicts on the Kaiapoi arson case.
Evidence was given that a group of youths, who had been drinking at a house garage in Kaiapoi on the evening of January 1, set fire to a house in Williams Street, occupied
by three men with whom they were having an feud. Stephen Shane Watt, aged 18, a labourer, was found guilty of arson and attempted arson. Mark Alan Seddon,aged 19, unemployed pleaded guilty to attempted arson and was found not guilty of arson.
Adam Hopkinson, aged 17, a labourer, was found guilty of attempted arson and not guilty of arson. Quentin Russell John Gordon, aged 18, unemployed was found not guilty of attempted arson and was discharged under section 347 on a charge of arson on Friday. Shane Arthur Gordon, aged 20, a factory hand,
was discharged under section 347 on . Friday ? on charges of attempted arson and arson, ir .y.
. Geoffrey Llewellyn David Gordon, aged (22, unemployed, pleaded guilty on arraignment to charges of arson and-at-tempted arson. f | All accused were ; remanded on ban to July 31 for sentence.
