China fair help canned
PA , Wellington The Trade and Industry Department has canned nearly $200,000 in sponsorship for agricultural equipment firms to attend a Chinese international trade fair.
Thirteen firms said they wanted to go to the Ag China fair, to be staged in Canton in November, a department source said. At least 12 exhibiting firms were thought to be needed to make departmental sponsorship worth while.
One by one the firms pulled out until only about four still intended to go, forcing the department to withdraw its offer of building display stands and meeting administrative cost.
Reasons given for the firms’ withdrawal were the domestic downturn in agriculture, and the moving of the fair from Peking this year.
