Farmers warned on freezing works

PA Blenheim Waitaki International has warned Marlborough farmers that unless they guarantee to support the company’s Blenheim freezing works next season, it is likely to be closed. The company’s managing director, Mr Athol Hutton, told a meeting of the Marlborough Producers Freezing Committee in Blenheim yesterday that the national kill of ewes had dropped almost 45 per cent since last year. He said he expected the number of lambs and

ewes presented to fall further next season. Full and part works closings were thus being considered. He said that 580,000 sheep and lambs processed was not enough for a $4O million plant built for 800,000 or more. “How does the plant keep going?” he added. Marlborough Federated Farmers meat and wool section representatives agreed to meet as soon as possible to discuss options that would ensure farmers supported Waitaki Marlborough.
