Park’s new four-day track planned

The Government will provide the Fiordland National Park Board with $700,000 to construct a high standard walking track through the Kepler Mountains west of Te Anau.

The proposed 30km track will be equipped with three huts for overnight accommodation and will link the existing Mount Luxmore, Upper Waiau, and Shallow Bay tracks. The round trip will take four days and will be suitable for trampers of average fitness. The scenery, particularly in the Upper Iris Burn, is comparable to that along the Milford Track. Trampers will gain excellent views of Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau, of the Takitimu Mountains, and, on a clear day, Stewart Island. The main access/egress point will be at the Lake Te Anau control gates, about three kilometres from the town.
