Speedy skiers

Three skiers exceeded lOOkm/h when the first event of the 1986 New Zealand Speed Cup series was held at Mount Hutt on Sunday.

The winner was the New Zealand speed record holder, Henry van Asch, who was recorded at 103.81 km/h through the 25-metre speed trap. He won a day’s heli ski-ing with Mountain Guides, Twizel.

Competitors raced on a relatively short track about 300 m long, and there was never any likelihood of record speeds being reached. Van Asch’s national record of 161.39 km/h was set at Turoa last year. The speed skiers had practice runs on Friday, but no

racing was possible on Saturday. On Sunday the track had been slightly blown out by the wind. More snow had to be shovelled on to the course.

The next event is at Cardrona from July 31 to August 3. Results: — Men. — Henry van Asch, 103.8 km/h, I; Roo Thomas, 102.97, 2; Dan van Asch. 100.67, 3; Mark Duncan (Canada), 99.56, 4; Martin Jones, 98.68, 5.
