Myxomatosis
Sir,—Myxomatosis has become a dirty word in New Zealand, at least to those who have some compassion for the defenceless rabbits (according to Mr Butcher, Under-Secretary of Agriculture, 75 per cent of the population. I would like to think it is more than 75 per cent). It is not the need to keep the rabbit numbers down that is the concern, but the torture that is inflicted upon them when myxomatosis is used, so I hope that its use is not a fait accompli — as' mentioned Derrick Rooney’s
“Country Diary” article, “The Press,” July 10. Probably the taxpayer will have to foot the bill whatever is used, so let it be by some humane method. Surely Mr Lange and his cabinet cannot think of sanctioning such a barbarous form of control with a clear conscience.—Yours, etc., J. LEESON. July 12, 1986.
