Periodic detention for man guilty of arson

PA Wellington A Martinborough man’s unsuccessful tracking business led bim. to offences resulting in nearly $lOO,OOO damage. In tbe High Court at Wellington, David Simon Endri, aged 25, unemployed, was sentenced; to eight months periodic detention and eight months supervision for arson on December 6.

Endri pleaded guilty to arson, two charges of wilfully setting fire to a track, two charges of false pretences. and three charges of theft

, On each of the charges of wilfuly setting fire to a truck, Mr Justice McGectian ordered Endri to do six months’ periodic detention, and placed him on supervision for six months.

On each of the charges of theft and false pretences Endri was fined $5OO.

His Honour said he did not make an order for the $50,000 that was Endri’s share of the reparation for the damage, because Endri had no money or assets and debts of $lO,OOO. Endri was dealt with leniently in the hope that he was not past redemption, said his Honour.

If he went to prison, Endri might never recover, and it might turn him into what he was not yet, a habitual criminal. Endri bought a truck by making false representations to a finance company, said his Honour. The track needed costly repairs, and it was decided to burn it in the garage, where it was being repaired, and claim insurance.

Endri took' a gearbox and trailer from the garage, and then poured petrol around two trucks in the garage, one of which was his.

His Honour said that at the last minute the enormity of what he was doing dawned on Endri, and he stopped.

Endri’s associate lit the accelerant

About $5OO damage was done to the garage, and both trucks were destroyed.

His Honour said Endri’s purchase of the truck had led to a financial and personal crisis. Endri’s counsel, Mr Tony Zohrab, said the police were still looking for Endri’s associate./ Mr . Grant Burston appeared for the Crown.
