Soviet Muslim pop. rises
NZPA-Reuter Moscow
The population of the Soviet Union stood at 280.1 million on July 1, the official news agency, Tass, said yesterday quoting the Central Statistics Board.
The figure marks a rise of three million people over the same date last year, and of five million
since 1984. The Soviet population has been growing unevenly in recent years. The largest increases are recorded in the central Asian republics. In nonMuslim areas of the country the growth rate is comparatively low.
Official statistics show, for example, that in the years 1979-84 the popula-
tion of Uzbekistan, in central Asia, increased 13.7 per cent, in the Russian Federation it grew 3.3 per cent and in the Ukraine by only 1.8 per cent.
To stem the decline in areas of the country with Slavic populations, the Soviet authorities have introduced special allowances for families with more than three children.
