Kennedy bride basks in wedding flattery

Caroline Kennedy has shunned publicity since the day her father, John, was killed. But on her wedding-day she seemed to enjoy the adulation of an admiring public. Some 2*M onlookers watched Caroline, aged 28, marry a New York artist and author, Edwin Schlossberg, aged 41, yesterday in a small, weathered country church. “It’s so nice to be able to share something happy with this family," said Ann Puckford, a Hyannis Port resident who waited all‘ day outside the church to get a glimpse of Caroline, her family, and the more than 4W guests. *Tm so tired of always going past all those Kennedy memorials," she said.

The bride, a law student at Columbia University, in New York, Is one of the most private members of the Kennedy family and never gives interviews.

She ignored reporters and onlookers when she was maid of honour at the wedding of her cousin, Maria Shriver, to Arnold Schwarzenegger, in April. But yesterday Caroline, looking very much like her chic mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, waved and smiled before entering Our Lady of Victory Church in nearby Centreville. After the ceremony was over she granted photographers’ requests to kiss Mr Schlossberg for the cameras. Caroline wore an elegant gown made by Carolina Herrera, a favourite designer of her mothers. The dress, of white silk organza, Was longwaisted, short-sleeved, and covered with appliqued' clover-leaves. She carried white orchids. The groom wore a navy-blue linen suit and silver tie designed by Willi Smith,; best, known for his sportswear. Smith did all the clothes loir the wedding attendants, 1 too. The best man, Caroline’s brother, John, and 10 ushers wore blue linen blazers, white trousers and pale pink ties. The matron of honour, Maria Shriver, and seven bridesmaids wore lavender and white silk anklelength dresses. The crowd’s loudest applause Jackie, who wore a mint-green knee-length dress. Among the guests were most of the members of the New Frontier, as John Kennedy’s Administration was known before his assassination on November 22,1963, when Caroline was six.

The ceremony, conducted by the Rev. Donald MacWilllam, was private and the reception even more so. The police blocked the road that runs past the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, where guests dined and danced under a white tent Guests danced to a local band, The Supreme Court and listened to a pop singer, Carly Simon, a Kennedy family friend. The reception went well into the night, and was topped off by a display of fireworks given by an author, George Plimpton. -
