Fisherman nets plane wreckage

A Lyttelton fisherman may have discovered the wreckage of a small plane which crashed in 1977. Mr Tony Threadwell was out in the 16m Aotea fishing for orange roughy last Wednesday evening when the net snagged something on the seabed. The trawler was about 30 km east of Point Gibson, about 100 km north of Lyttelton Heads, at the time. When the net was hauled in, a metre section of aluminium, thought to be a section of fuselage, came with it. Mr Threadwell has been told by Civil Avia-

tion Division officials that it is prdbably from a Cessna Titan which went down with its Auckland pilot, in August 1977. The pilot’s body was, never found.

“I would say the entire plane is still down there — probably the body as well,” said Mr Threadwell. “We were hooked solidly but when we got the gear back there were only a couple of small bits.”

Mr Threadwell does not believe the aircraft or the body can be recovered because the water in the area is about 800 m deep.
