New Zealand’s top diesel mechanic for 1986, Paul Collier, of Christchurch, on the job at Nevell’s Transport in Upper Riccarton last week. Mr Collier, aged 20, gained 84 per cent, the highest mark in New Zealand, in the final grade one examination for diesel mechanic apprentices. He was presented with a tool box as a prize by the Motor Trades Association at the Autolodge in Christchurch on Wednesday. Mr Collier completed his apprenticeship a year earlier than the normal four-year term by working overtime to complete the 8000 hours necessary.
