Canterbury 100km title to Lauder
A spirited fight-back over the final metres by Aaron Lauder, of the Homby Club, clinched him victory in the Canterbury 100 km open cycling championship at Sefton on Saturday. Lauder, who rode near the front of the mass-started field of senior, junior, and veteran riders throughout, made several attempts to make a break in the final 20km lap, but lacked support and had to drop back. Jason Smith, the promising Woolston junior rider, attempted to get away in the last 10km at the Ashley township. However, he was picked up after several unsuccessful breaks by Greg Hume (Papanui).
Hume, riding his first open race after an injury, made a determined burst on the incline into Sefton. With Alex Laplanche on his wheel he opened up a break on the bunch.
The two riders were picked up with only Ikm to ride. With a large bunch finish envisaged, the Homby junior,
Carlos Marryatt, made a spirited effort in the last 800 m to get away, but tired short of the line, allowing Lauder to come through to win by 0.5 s from Marryatt, with Smith a further 0.5 s back in third place. Abbreviations used in the results are: Woolston General Lee (W), Healing Papanui (H.P.), Homby W.M.C. (H), Wellington (WGNI.
