Linwood clear in “Press” Cup

Linwood has taken a twopoint lead in "The Press” Centennial Cup competition, to find the best and fairest of the senior rugby teams.

Although it dropped three points for its sportsmanship on Saturday, a fine display of attacking rugby earned Linwood the full eight for how well it played. Linwood had previously shared the lead with High School Old Boys, but Old Boys dropped back with a disappointing display against Shirley in the main game of the day. Sydenham, which was the only side on Saturday to gain full marks for sportsmanship, has moved into second place, while Lyttelton matched Linwood in getting the full eight for the

quality of its rugby. Saturday’s points:— Sydenham, sportsmanship 12, constructiveness 7, total 19; Shirley, 11, 7, 18; Lyttelton, 10, 8, 18; Marist, 10, 7, 17; Christchurch, 11, 0, 17; Linwood, 9,8, 17; Albion, 11, 0, 17; Lincoln College, 11, 6, 17; Suburbs, 11, 5,16; University, 9, 6,15; High School Old Boys, 10, 4, 14; Belfast 9,5, 14; New Brighton, 9,5, 14; Burnside, 10, 4, 14; Hornby, 9,4, 13.
