Johnstone not overawed

The fact that his opponent had won seven successive fights in Samoa counted for nothing for Tony Johnstone (Richmond. W.M.C) when he gained a unanimous decision over Pau Palo (Fidow’s) in one of the main bouts at the Canterbury Boxing Association’s tournament at the Richmond W.M.C yesterday.

Johnstone started cautiously, but showed good skills when he had warmed to the task and outboxed Palo. Earlier in the programme, Johnstone’s brother, Robert, had also taken a unanimous points win over Troy Trinder (Gree Island). In a three-round contest, Shane Gordon (Bell’s) used a powerful left hand to telling effect against Marty Callahan (Crichton Cobbers) and was clearly superior, although Callaghan rallied valiantly in the final round.

Stormy Cosgrave, of Timaru, stormed back to take a majority decision over Lincoln Newsome (Papanui) in a close bout; Newsome had started well, scoring with clean blows.

Two 10-year-olds provided the crowd with some of the best entertainment Perry Scarlet (Woolston W.M.C) and Melvin McCausland (Barry's) traded blows almost non-stop, McCausland taking a majority decision. The referees were Messrs

W. Atkins, Z. McDonald and M. Drury. That trio, along with Messrs P. Leonard, B. Williams and N. Withers, acted as judges. Results:—

J. Burrows (Dickson’s) beat D. Lamb (Crichton Cobbers), unanimous points; C McKeown (Richmond W.M.C.) beat W. Jamieson (Crichton Cobbers), unanimous points; J. McQuillan (Barry’s) beat S. Clarke (Woolston W.M.C.), majority points; J. Spence (Richmond W.M.C.) beat G. Coles (Crichton Cobbers) majority points; M. McCausland (Barry’s) beat P. Scarlet (Woolston W.M.C), majority points;' A.
