Contrasting wins by women

Bumham and Rebels of Mid-Canterbury, recorded contrasting wins in the women’s division one basketbail matches at Pioneer Stadium on Saturday. While Bumham had just five points to spare in outplaying a disorganised Charisma-Y.M.C.A. team, 5449, Rebels thumped Continental Caterers Rangiora, 56-32. Checkers beat Aranui 61-57 in a match played earlier last week, because the Canterbury league team had an away match during the weekend in the national competition. Checkers, last year’s national club champion and the Patron’s Trophy winner this season, is well in command of the championship section.

It is unbeaten with six wins, four points clear of the 1985 champion, Aranui, Edgeils Halswell and the improving Burnham. The fleet footed Y.M.C.A. captain, Margaret Cuttance still leads the individual points table for the

season, stretching her tally to 208 from 12 games (average 17.3) while Bumham’s young playmaker, Rhonda Milner, remains second, on 170 (average 14.1). Other leading scorers are:— L. McGrath (Rebels, 147, 12 games), B. Carr (Checkers 135, 12), J. Cook (Checkers, 135, 12), T. Beukenholdt (Aranui 117, 10), Y. Crichton-Hill, (Bumham 116, 11), M. Cassidy (Checkers 111, 11), J. Harris (Rangiora 102, 12), L. Erb (Checkers, 96, 9). Placings in the championship section at the end of the first round-robin:

Hill gave Bumham a strong start 12-3, after seven minutes. Margaret Cuttance and Leane McLintock pulled Y.M.C.A. back to snatch a brief lead 15-14, after 14 minutes.

Poor finishing by Y.M.C.A. allowed Burnham to pull away to lead, 28-23, by halftime with Rhonda Milner chiming in with her regular contributions. Julie McGrath made a strong effort for Burnham in the second spell while Crich-ton-Hill picked up another four baskets to finish with a valuable 23 points.

Burnham's consistant team work this season has enabled it to rise to share second place at the mid-point of the competition. Y.M.CA.’s downfall was its lack of team effort and coordination althought individual efforts by Cuttance McLintock and, in the latter stages, Donna Broughton, kept the second spell evenly matched.

Y.M.C.A. closed the gap to 32-29 and 37-33, but Burnham pushed ahead and from 48-37 after 13 minutes, was out of reach.

It positioned itself better and got a higher pecentage of the rebound ball, often at the expense of the slower-moving Rangiora rebounders.

Smith again showed promise, standing out for Rangiora, while Rongo King and Liz Mosley shared the mid-court Play.
