Waiting for Maggie
By Whim Wham This Commonwealth, of course, is Brit — And that means Maggie, doesn’t It? The bossiest Stateslady, born to wag the Finger, scold, or warn — Britannia with her Shield and Trident Just ruled the Waves, she wasn’t strident, Like Maggie — short of Waves to rule But still Headmistress of that School, She calls the Roll, she marks the Names Of Absentees from Class, and Games! The Names, both Africans and Asians, Of this great Commonwealth of Nations Of those whose Governments demand Sanctions against Apartheidland — Of those whose Twenty Million Kin Are disenfranchised by their Skin! Of those who sweat for Maggie’s Friends, Their Luxuries, and their Dividends — Who brave the Bullets and the Whips, While Rugby Wives can have their Trips And Sponsors sign their Partnerships! Does Maggie stand alone — perhaps? If so, and if that’s All it’s good for, This Commonwealth and All it stood for, These Games — a mutilated Rump — History can cart It to the Dump, Just One more THINK BIG down the River, Which promised, and did not deliver!
