Goods, services tax
Sir,—GST propaganda so far has done more to puzzle than to explain. This system was turned down by Australia and Japan so we should have had the chance to explore other methods. None
would be perfect, nothing human ever Is, but at least we would be sure we had the best. Now it is too late to change; but, if necessary, we .could switch' to the transfer tax, using the expanding banking system already in place. It does not need employer collection, hard on small businesses, nor 4000 extra staff plus their cars and expenses. GST costs so much to collect that we may not have more money in our pockets. More likely, the rate will rise or some tax concessions will not be possible, unless means-tested. — Ydurs, etc., * a. m. Coates. July 17, 1986.
