England walk-out call revealed

NZPA-Reuter Birmingham Britain’s world and Commonwealth 1500 metres champion, Steve Cram, said yesterday that he had been asked to lead an England boycott of this week’s Edinburgh Commonwealth Games.

As the protest about the British stance on South Africa continued with more nations withdrawing, Cram said that he had been approached by athletes who had suggested that he lead an England withdrawal from the Games. Cram said that although he had sympathy for the idea he had turned down the offer and did not think boycotts worked.

“I sympathise with the thoughts behind it It would at least have been the athletes making the choice and it might bring some pressure to bear.

“While I am not £ political animal I believe the reasons behind the boycott are right,” he said.

Cram, who declined to name the athletes, said any boycott would have to include the whole England Games team and if there was a general walk-out he would join it

He said “one or two lads” had mentioned the idea at the Nice Grand Prix meeting last week.
