Pupils sit maths preliminary

Senior pupils at Linwood High School, Zane Shatter (left), of the seventh form, and Michelle Mitchell, sixth form, together with fellow pupils, sit a preliminary paper for the BNZ senior mathematics competition. About 50 senior pupils of the school were among 1000 entrants from 38 schools in Canterbury who sat the preliminary yesterday. The competition had attracted about 5000 entries from more than 200 secondary schools in New Zealand, an increase of about 25 per cent on last year’s entries, said its co-ordi-nator, Mr John Edie.

The top 100 students in the preliminary examination will be presented with certificates of merit. A further 20 candidates will be chosen from this group to sit the final examination in Christchurch on October 3. Prizes for the first three place-getters range from $lOO to $3OO. The competition was established in 1967 by the Canterbury Mathematical Association. r
