Sheep dying from lack of feed

PA Hastings Sheep are dying from a lack of feed in parts of Hawke’s Bay in a drought worse than that of the summer of 1981-82, says the president of Hawke’s Bay Federated Farmers, Mr Doug Nowell-Usticke.

“A winter drought is far worse than a summer drought,” he said. Ewes under stress at lambing were dying of sleepy sickness, a mineral deficiency brought on by a shortage of feed. Mr Nowell-Usticke said there had been little grass growth since April, when farmers at that time had big numbers of cattle and some lambs still on their farms because of the sixweek strike by freezing workers.
