Goal-keepers to lead Canty hockey teams

Both the Canterbury A and B women’s hockey teams chosen for the national tournament in Dunedin from September 1 to September 6 will be in the unusual situation of being captained by goalkeepers.
Lesley Murdoch, the former New Zealand representative, will captain the A team, and Elaine Jensen has been appointed captain of the B team.
The A team will also be breaking new ground at the tournament It has built an impressive record in provincial hockey in the last eight years, and that record has been recognised by the New Zealand Permanent Building Society, which will sponsor the team. Part of the sponsorship agreement is that the Canterbury team carries the sponsor’s name.
Robyn Hickley, of Liquorland Harewood, is
the only new cap in the A team, which will be without five of its six New Zealand players. Cathy Thompson is the only player who will have returned from the World Cup, which will finish in Amsterdam on August 24.
There are four new players in the B team. They are Sharon Bell, Kate Trolove, Trish Harte and Jo Painter. It has taken Harte three years to fulfil her dream of playing for Canterbury at a national tournament. She was unavailable in the previous two years because of an injury in 1984 and illness last year. the teams are:
Canterbury A: Jane Earnshaw, Judy Phillips, Leanne McFadden, Kieren Doig, Lorraine Rouse (Bumside); Shirley Haig, Carthy Thompson, Lesley Murdoch (captain), Mary Devine (Carlton); Robyn Hickley, Maree Flannery (vice-captain), (Harewood); Tracey Snelling, Sue Duggan (Woolston); Nicky Sherriff (Selwyn). Haig is the player-coach,
and Mrs Maureen Ogier the manager.
Canterbury B: Elaine Jensen (Harewood, captain); Geneva Kara, Kerrin Dawe, Ginny Richards (Pegasus); Jane Jenkins, Pip Wilson, Jo Painter, Trish Harte (Selwyn); Hayley Read, Henrietta Carroll, (vice-captalh); Sue Edmundson (Carlton); Sharon Bell, Kate Trolove (Bumside); Janet Sperry (Woolston).
Wendy Stock is the coach and Mrs Ann Mcßobb the manager.
• A Canterbury Invitation team to play South Canterbury at Timaru on Sunday has also been named. It will be coached by Lynn Schulz. The team is:
