Urgent court hearing

PA Wellington Campaigners seeking to ban the French film, "Hail, Mary,” from showing in New Zealand were yesterday granted an urgent fixture after applying to the High Court An application for an order quashing or setting aside the film censor’s decision in respect of the film and its certificate of approval will be heard on Thursday, July 24. The applicants, Brian Wheeler, Joseph de Souza and Janet Curran, all Catholics, yesterday through their solicitor, Mr Des Dalgety, asked the High Court for an urgent hearing.

Mr Justice McGechan approved. The defendant the Chief Film Censor, Mr Arthur Everard, represented by Mr Colin Young, has to file the appropriate documents by next Monday. If the application for quashing or setting aside is successful the film, which has a rating for general exhibition but recommended as more suitable for adults, will not be screened in New Zealand under this present certificate.
