A family affair

The Osmonds are a fire-fighting family, as will be obvious on Friday When Christchurch’s former Chief Fire Officer, Mr Roy Osmond, aged 78 (right), presents his son, Assistant Fire Commander Alan Osmond, with a gold star for 25 years service. Mr Osmond sen. was Chief Fire Officer in Christchurch from 1953 until his retirement in 1969. Mr Osmond jun. has been Christchurch’s deputy Chief Fire Officer since 1981. “I have never served

under dad — just to make it clear that there hasn’t been any funny business like the odd helping hand,” joked Mr Alan Osmond yesterday. Mr Roy Osmond started his 41-year Fire Service career in Dunedin in 1928. Mr Alan Osmond joined in Wellington in 1956, and, apart from four years out of the service, has spent most of his 25 years there. Mr Alan Osmond said that his father had not

been in the best of health, but was looking forward to the presentation and his part in it. “It has really cheered him up. He is thrilled,” said Mr Osmond. Three other firemen will receive gold stars at the ceremony. The presentations must be made by a president or pastpresident of the United Fire Brigades’ Association. Mr Osmond sen. is a past-president.
