Airport firemen to act

PA Wellington Wellington Airport’s crash firemen have given 14 days notice of industrial action over the Ministry of Transport’s restructuring of airport crash fire services. The firemen believe that the Ministry has welshed on an agreement made two years ago on the manning of airport crash fire services. One effect of the planned restructuring is that five regional airports

wlll lose full-time firefighting staff and equipment, and the firemen fear that more reductions might follow.

A spokesman for the Wellington crash firemen said that staff now feared for their jobs and futures, quite apart from concern about the safety aspects of cutting fire services. Airport firemen, the Airline Pilots’ Association, and the Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Union have

all expressed serious conceit about fire safety at the five airports being downgraded:-— Whakatane, Paraparaumu, Wanganui, Whangarei and Taupo. Yesterday crash firemen at Auckland Airport called off a planned stopwork to have begun at 7 a.m. today. A spokesman said further talks with the Ministry would be held on the issue tomorrow.
