Legal action against Censor

PA Wellington Three campaigners who sought to ban the French film, "Hail, Mary," from showing in New Zealand have taken unprecedented legal proceeding against the Chief Film Censor. Active Catholics, Brian Wheeler, Joseph Lopes de Souza and Janet Curran, are the applicants in a case filed in the High Court late on Monday afternoon against the Censor, Mr Arthur Everank The three are seeking a judicial review to make an order quashing or setting aside the Censor’s decision in respect of the film and its certificate of approval, as well as declaring the exhibition of the film to date as a contravention of the Films Act, 1983. If successful, the JeanLuc Godard film which has been given a rating for general exhibition but recommended as more suitable for adults will not be screened in New Zealand again under its present certificate.

The applicants headed the committee which raised 12,500 signatures in a petition calling for the film to be banned. The film was screened as part of the Wellington Film Festival.
